Floyd and Norma Souders had a great love for Kansas, rural life, and history. They spent decades collecting and preserving artifacts, memorabilia, photos, and structures. Along with the museum, Floyd and Norma made many other contributions to their community and the State of Kansas. They published The Cheney Sentinel, now The Times Sentinel, for more than 30 years. Floyd served as Superintendent of the Cheney school district, president of the Kansas State Historical Society, and as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives & State Board of Education. He was also instrumental in moving the Sedgwick County Fair to Cheney, KS. Norma worked beside him in the newspaper, conducted much of the historic research, and was active in the community.
Floyd died in 1996, at the age of 90. Norma died in 2005, at the age of 95.
Our Chapel was built in 1969 and was the first building built. The steeple stood on the Cheney Methodist Church in 1884 and was donated, along with the pews inside.
The Wash House displays early laundry, cooking, and canning tools. Including a green cupboard in which Floyd Souder's grandparents, Abner and Laura Sears, brought with them to Kansas in a covered wagon.
The General Store, one of many on the Main Street, displays canning jars, irons, general medicines, hygiene, and several other items found in a shop. A motion picture projector used by Oscar Sellon, Cheney's pioneer photographer from 1883-1900. And much more.
Also, be sure not to miss our original one room school house from 1880, our two train depots donated from Garden Plain and Cheney, KS. A Law Office, Livery Stable, Print Shop, Shoe Shop, Bank, Barber Shop, Post Office, Telephone Office, Jail, and Firehouse.
The 10-acre Souders Historical Farm Museum depicts small town, rural life in the late 1800s to the mid-1900s.
Our team consists of dedicated family members who grew up running around the museum themselves. Seeing the passion and love for the community, first hand from Floyd & Norma Souders makes it that much easier to want to keep the museum running.
We are just as excited about keeping Souders Museum going as the amazing visitors that always share their love and fond memories of the museum with us. With the help of our supportive community and donations, we will keep being able to do updates and repairs so that we can all continue to enjoy Souders for many years in the future.
